not really bicycling yet [May. 24th, 2006|05:54 pm]
This is me from the University of British Columbia Library.
This is the communal blog: windybacks.blogspot.com
This is my update:

I was on a train 12pm Friday through 1030am Monday, Boston to Seattle. We got "smoking breaks" which in real life were stretching breaks for healthy people, during which we were allowed off the train for period varying from 5 minutes to an hour. So i got to walk around in all the states between the two cities. It was real fun. I didn't get bored once, which i was happy about and also surprised about, but with a nice observation car with giant windows and nice people and lots of tasty grocery store food, it would have taken a lot to get me bored. I'd recommend the trip, but maybe a sleeper car would have been more pleasant.

We stayed in Seattle with friends of friends. I got to visit some cousins and go to my first ever Little League game. This morning we took another train to Vancouver, BC, so tonight and tomorrow we are here at a Hostelling Internatinal hostel. Then Friday we start biking! Ferry to the San Juan Islands and then Olympic National Forest and then south south south.

The west coast is a friendly area, except in Vancouver it seems the locals missed that memo (maybe it is just those Canadians). We got lots of smiles and helpful facts from Seattle folk, including bikers with beautitful calf muscles (swoonage, yes). The weather up here is rainy and sunny. It is often gray and misting but not cold and not pouring. Also not sunny too often.

I'm not really sure what this lj will become for the next five weeks, as a separate area from my paper journal and mass emails (Want in? Let me know; you might already be unknowingly on the email list that i haven't made up yet) and the blogspot. If you have ideas that are brilliant or silly or otherwise, please suggest!

Ok! Now to find some burritos.

Commence! [May. 15th, 2006|02:28 pm]
Ahhh, graduation. It went like this:

I woke up with Pete and did a little dance with rain and clothes and loud music. Hopped on a shuttle to Nickerson Field, where i swapped my yellow raincoat for a clear poncho (sweeet), and met up with Miker, Katie, Party Mike, Roheet, and James. We wrote Sigma Mu Delta on our caps and went to sit in the rain. They cut the ceremony short from two hours to one, but just the same, i couldn't feel my feet at all by the end. Katie and Miker and i ate bananas that i had brought, and we started laughing real hard. I have no idea what it was about anymore, but that's certainly not the point.

After that, i walked home with no feet and changed my clothes and walked with my dad to the Fuller Building, where the Political Science ceremony was. I don't know too many people in poli sci, so that was a whole lot of awkwardly standing around and talking to random people i had never met before. And i lost my tassel. So i borrowed someone else's so i could get my diploma while i was wearing one. And Mom's camera batteries died which is okay because i don't like taking stupid formal pictures anyway.

Packing was me putting stuff i wanted to keep in boxes and my dad putting stuff i didn't want to keep in the garbage. In his zest for cleaning, he also threw out my wallet. That meant i go to go dumpster diving with my dad! Let me tell you how fun it is to search through the trash in the rain with your father on move-out day for a small object. Well, it is freakin fun. And we found the wallet! Whew.

I think i ran up and down my stairs at least 30 times yesterday. Good thing, because i've done it a whole lot in 3 years of living in that building and i won't be doing it again for a while, if ever. My dad and i drove away at 9pm and stopped at Rein's deli, which is a great yummy place in a great (yummy?) location. We got home at 1230 and my stuff is all still packed in the car. Time for that, i guess.

Eating [May. 12th, 2006|10:34 pm]
So much free food today. So much doubt that i will make it to Wheelworks tomorrow. That is realllly bad.

I went to Rosie's Place and finally finished serving lunch. It was maybe their first vegetarian meal ever (not counting the chicken soup) because the meatball subs were on backorder, so lunch was baked macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, and green beans. Well we don't want to serve the guests burnt mac & cheese! So it is saved until all the guests are served and then volunteers get to scrape the pan and eat the crispies. That was my lunch.

Champagne reception was great. I had two drinks which i guess is perfect for my desired drunkenness. Giggly, and with Miker everything gets a little worse/better. Cucumber sandwiches galore. Okay, i guess technically this wasn't free because i had to pay for the ticket. But still anyway real fun.

Barbeque at Katie's house brought vegetable kabobs! And corn and a slice of cheese and half an ice cream sandwich. Maybe this wasn't free either because they are my friends and i give lots of hugs and laughs in return. (Right, guys?)

In conclusion, woooo! Free stuff is hot because today i used all the money that was available on my credit card.

email, v.2 [Apr. 22nd, 2006|10:25 am]
I have had a wicked good past couple days. Wednesday i went to Ace Wheelworks with Damon. Thursday i went to Ace Wheelworks with my friend Ben P. Friday i said "What! Apparently boys must accompany me to Ace Wheelworks whenenver i go" so Ben A. was going to come with me but then i found out that my bike was ready to be bought! So i had to take the T there, which Ben wasn't really interested in, and i don't blame him! Then i brought home my bike! It is a 44cm, which is tiny tiny but i love it. It is the one in my last entry but only much smaller.

I have been making a spreadsheet of all the gear i need for the trip so i make sure i am paying the least for the best. and on Thursday, i had a biiiig craving for El Pelon and i called lots of people but they were all busy or had eaten already so i called Shannon even though i knew she had eaten there on Monday already. I said "What are you doing?" and she said "Eating a burrito at El Pelon." And i said "DON'T MOVE! I AM COMING RIGHT NOW." It was great even though they were out of plantains. Then she came over to look at my spreadsheet and Jolie called and i told her that Shannon was looking at my spreadsheet and Jolie said "Why is she looking at your bedsheet?"

Then yesterday i slept through my only class! And it was Earth Day celebrations so everyone was happy on Marsh. I went with my floppy hat. Then Barbara called and said "I'm on Beacon Street! Tell me a Mexican restaurant!" So she found Boca Grande and i went to meet her and her friends and it was real fun and then i went back to Marsh. Then i found out i could go get my bike! So i did that and kind of freaked out about spending a million dollars on a 44cm bike but i realized that if the 49cm frame doesn't fit, i should def get the 44cm and just get bigger parts. So i bought it and riding it home was gloorrriiioooouusss. And THEN i went to the ballet with Ben P! Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, with a slightly different story line than the original and all male swans! It was so good! And also there were lots of guys at the performance because the main character is gay, and so the line for the men's room was just as long as the line for the women's room (that part of the ballet was good too). Then we walked to the Other Side because neither of us ate dinner, and then we went home. It was a great day and being outside was great.

Secretly i will miss test-riding bikes because that is the only time i am ever allowed to ride with no helmet and it is nice to feel the breeze on my head. But also it is nice not to die, so that is why i wear a helmet all the other times.

no pantains [Apr. 21st, 2006|12:03 am]
The bike trip is finally kind of coming together. And by that i mean i almost have a bicycle. I think it is going to be this one.

I hope we get along well.

Buying things seem really drawn out lately. To get a CD i wanted, i 1)went to the store and had to order it because it wasn't in stock; 2)went to the store to buy it; 3)went to the store to buy it again because i forgot my gift card the first time; 4)went to the store to see if i could exchange it for another because there was a crease in the liner notes; 5)went to the store to finally get a copy of the CD that i am going to keep.

To get this bicycle, i 1)went to the store to look at bikes; 2)went to the store to test ride bikes they built for me; 3)am going back to the store to test ride another bike that hopefully will fit me better; 4)will go back to the store to buy the bike when they get it in stock.

So this isn't as easy as going to the CD store, which was a little over a mile away. That i could do in a half an hour total. No, this bike store is four miles away. That means it takes me a half an hour just to get there so i have to allot 1.5-2 hours for every trip. It is a great way to get out of homework!

Speaking of getting out of homework, the weather is nice and i failed at my plan to get lots of work done earlier in the month. Duh. Also speaking of getting out of homework, i am a lot calmer than i was a month ago about graduating. Maybe it is just because summer plans are solidifying or maybe it is just because who cares! The world will take care of me. And that, my friends, is the voice of an upper/middle-class young woman.

the awkward and uncertain [Mar. 29th, 2006|10:36 pm]
i caught a whiff of summer on my ride home tonight.

i caught a whiff of being doored hardcore on my ride out tonight.

i have two big things due in about a month. i made a goal to start working on them a lot before the weather got even more conducive to enjoyment. so far it's not going well. i cook too much. and i have too many friends. i'm a lucky puppy.

Andy Cullen is home. he has become one of my too many friends.

i don't really know what else. i am out of juice and cereal. my life is pretty much over. soon i am going to take a shower and then fold my laundry from yesterday while we are both clean.

happy spring.

yogurt [Mar. 14th, 2006|10:10 pm]
yoga is amazing. i haven't felt this way until about a month ago, when we got advanced enough that i actually feel a stretch. i wonder how i got this elastic body and kind of wish that i could take a class with people who are more at my level. not that i'm not being challenged enough, but i feel like people kind of stare at me the whole class. and that is distracting. especially it doesn't help when the instructor asks me to demonstrate a pose because i can do it and she can't. it gets me out of the zone. i want there to be more room in my apartment. or maybe just that i could remember more poses that are do-able in a small space. because i want to do this all the time.

spring break was vanny and vomitous and bisonful and lighteningy and Kentucky.

spring break + yoga )

lost on Lost [Feb. 22nd, 2006|10:00 pm]
purchase of the year: on Sunday, i bought Taboo for $3. Katie shops for shoes, i shop for games. everyone's happy.

yesterday i went to Jolie's at 6pm with the plan to make dinner. by the time we got to her house, decided what to make, went to the grocery store, and cooked it, it was 9:15. and we were fat. oh but the best part: well it was enchiladas and it had a red sauce that you pour on top. the sauce called for a chipotle pepper, or if you couldn't find the pepper, you could get it in a can with adobo sauce, or if you couldn't find that, you could use 1/4 TSP LIQUID SMOKE. whaaaat. well anyway we used a pepper from the can. before it was cooked, this sauce was so hot and smoky that we started violently coughing after merely standing over the bowl the sauce had been in. it was fucking badass stuff. shit.

also related to a coat of arms: a bare face. imagine if you had a bear face! whoa! and we decided that a vest of arms would make more sense, because a coat would just be too big. even though it sort of ruins the funny part of it.

a million people are happening! i like that.

i forwarded the email from Dean Elmore about that Norovirus to my mom and basically said "if i get sick, this is maybe the problem. just so you know." she emailed me back:

HANDWASHING!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's probably not a bad idea to try NOT to eat in any of the dining rooms this week, if you can possibly help it.
do you have any PROVON, or the alcohol rub to sanitize your hands? if possible, even if you bring your own food or unwrap a CLIFF bar, wash your hands (or sanitize them) before you actually eat. your hands pick stuff up from door knobs, stairway railings, etc.
JUST A FRIENDLY NOTE FROM YOUR MOM, THE EPIDEMIOLOGIST!!!

i am prohibiting myself from cleaning unless i am wearing a helmet.

over break, i hit my head on the corner of a cabinet door in my kitchen and started bleeding. oh, and i knocked the cabinet door off its hinge. then i made the stupid mistake of asking Miker to come over to make sure i was ok. he almost threw up. no blood for Miker. well i was okay, even though i was worried i was going to have to go to the emergency room because it's been two years since i went and my life dictates that i go to the ER every two or three years. here's what i think: i went twice two years ago, so maybe that will hold me over for another few years? well i am fine.

today i was cleaning again. i hit my head against a door frame and started bleeding from my eyebrow. actually my eyebrow did a really good job because the blood did not drip; it just kind of pooled up. anyway, i am okay. whew.

cleaning helmet.

Kentucky [Feb. 6th, 2006|10:50 pm]
i think my favorite part of ASB registration this morning (other than the obvious standing outside for 2 hours before the sun came up) was doing the long-underwear dance with Jolie and Cordelia, during which we spontaneously dropped our outer pants to our knees and jumped around in our long underwear for 10 seconds.

stuck toes [Jan. 16th, 2006|02:00 am]
oh geez as tough as i think i am with the weather, walking home tonight from The Kells was a bad idea. one and a half miles at a real-feel of -7 degrees leaves me with red legs even an hour after i get home. so i am trying to warm up with long underwear and flannel pants and 3 warm shirts. i wish i had hot chocolate!

i made a really yummy sandwich so YUM!!

break was over so fast. things are changing so fast. i don't even know what is happening. i can't decide if i should take 3 classes so i can relax and enjoy my last months, or take 4 classes because this is my last chance to take classes for fun for free (not really for free, but they are included). unless i end up working for a university at some point. also i don't even know what classes to take!

i went to visit Grandma in Florida Monday through Wednesday. she thinks i am the funniest person in the world. it is great because we were not on very good terms up until a few years ago, when i realized that she is a real person whom i can learn from and joke with! so it is nice that we can have a real relationship now. we bonded. but i hate talking about politics with her. and also i hate when she talks about how she thinks she has to lose weight. she's a grandma!! she has grandma flab, but she is not fat at all. it is so hard for me not to roll my eyes at her. i beat her at Scrabble, 256-251. huah! fucking close game. and i didn't need a jacket.

is there a good dance club in Boston that you don't have to get dressied up for and also plays good music? i miss BritPop night at the Black Cat. pogo dancing!

turn it up etc [Jan. 3rd, 2006|01:52 pm]
i am the biggest wuss. there is a mouse under my bed. and i am scared of it. mostly i am scared of it dying in my bed! thanks for instilling that, Pete. or scared of it pooping in my bed. Elizabeth, did you instill that one? but Pete also thanks for taking care of the other mouse that was here.

oh, BU. if it's not roaches, it's mice. but i'd rather have mice, it's true.

making pizza dough today for cooking tomorrow. also whenever i sit on my bed for more reading, there is a huge grin on my face. break is great. except also my empty apartment is creepy, especially because i am not really alone here! mice!

the guy i sat next to on my flight to Pittsburgh (who likes cooking and board games: we are meant for each other (minus his fiancee and 8-year-old son)) was reading the life of Buddha in graphic-novel form which he said was great. so i want to read that too. ok add that to the list!

i had wanted to do some Harvard studies during break just because i can and i am not working ISCIP, but it seems there are no studies. oh dear.
